Santa Barbara Courthouse Covid Elopement | Lydia+Mark

Covid Santa Barbara Courthouse elopement couple.Things may look a little different nowadays, but that didn’t stop Lydia & Mark from having the best day ever during their Santa Barbara Courthouse Covid wedding. Although they hit a few bumps along the way, this stylish couple’s energy was radiant, their love for each other palpable, and they came ready to not only have a fabulous elopement, but knock their Santa Barbara Courthouse wedding photos out of the park!

A little bit from the couple…

“Mark and I met back “home” in Ohio working in the beer industry and with some of the best and worst timing, fell in love after he moved to Southern California. We both agree that the strength of our relationship exists because of how hard we had to work to stay connected from 3000 miles away. For one year, we bonded over video calls, monthly visits and creative date nights – we could give the best advice about staying connected to any pandemically-challenged couples out there!

After becoming engaged in New York City last December, we immediately knew we wanted our wedding day to be as uncomplicated and totally ‘us’ as possible- and set our sights on the most beautiful courthouse in the west – the Santa Barbara courthouse. The very last thing we did together before Shelter In Place was walk through the corridors, touring the grounds and becoming excited about our plans.

Ha. “Plans.” We shifted gears from a June wedding to October 2, just the two of us. And we had the most incredible, intimate, and romantic day. From start to finish, there was magic to it – including a very nice employee sneaking us to our dream photo op – that gorgeous staircase inside the Courthouse.

The last couple of years have been quite an adventure for us, but we’ve survived a lot together so far and are trying to live in the present every day – relishing in calling each other “my husband” and “hey wife”.”

The Boudoir Blog Has Moved!

Thank you for your interest and for staying up-to-date on my boudoir blog.

Boudoir photography has been a passion of mine for almost a decade. I have enjoyed photographing women of all walks of life, of varying journeys, from wanting to reclaim their womanhood, to celebrating milestones (such as marriage and pregnancy), to wanting to do this just for fun. Every person has their own story, and I am grateful to capture so many of them.

Considering the impact boudoir photography has had on so many of my clients (as well as on me), I felt it deserved its’ own dedicated platform. I have created a separate website for my portrait and boudoir photography. To see more of those genres of photography, intended to empower, uplift, and support women, by encouraging self-love and acceptance, please see my latest work at its’ new home–www.KDPortrait.com

Check it out to learn more about my mission and philosophy, and to see portraits of some badass women!

Wedding Veil Guide | Which Veil Is Right For You

Boho bride wearing a veil at her Belmond El Encanto wedding.Whether you choose to wear a veil on your wedding day is totally a personal decision–there is no right or wrong answer. However, if you do choose to wear one, there are definitely some things to keep in mind, in order to choose the veil that best fits your wedding dress, so it complements it, rather than distracting from it. I am no pro on veils, so I’ve enlisted Lisa of Lili Bridals, located in Tarzana, California, to help me with this wedding veil guide.Newlyweds at San Ysidro Ranch lavender field.Wedding veil guide, depicting different styles and lengths of veils.Use the above image as a reference for length.

From Lisa……

“Veils….to veil, or not to veil, that is the question.

I personally love a veil. It just completes the look, and creates a very romantic image, a complete bridal look. But that is not to say that EVERY bride needs to wear a veil. But when it’s right, it’s RIGHT. Below are some guidelines for choosing your veil:

Veils should be proportionate not only to the bride’s height, but also to the style-lines of the gown. For instance, what kind of waistline does the gown have? Is it a Mermaid, or a ballgown? Are there buttons down the back of the gown? Is there a bow? Also, something to take into consideration is what time of the day is the wedding?Elopement at the Santa Barbara Courthouse.Bride wearing a veil at San Ysidro Ranch lavender field..Cage veils or Juliette caps are good if you want to evoke a truly vintage look from the 20’s or 30’s, especially if you are having a Gatsby wedding. In terms of time of day, typically shorter veils are more appropriate for morning weddings, whereas weddings later in the day tend to be more formal, and therefore longer veils are more befitting. Bride getting ready for her Villa Verano wedding.Bride getting ready for her Villa Verano wedding.Fiesta bride wearing a cage veil at her Santa Barbra Courthouse wedding.Romantic portraits of bride and groom after their Canary Hotel wedding in Santa Barbara. For dresses with a natural waistline, waist length veils would be lovely, but a cathedral veil is also nice, and creates a good contrast to the silhouette.Biltmore Santa Barbra wedding bridal portrait..Couple in the rose garden at San Ysidro Ranch.Couple walking along the beach at their Four Seasons Santa Barbara wedding.Romantic sunset photo of couple on the beach with a cathedral veil. Are there buttons down the back of the dress? If so, the end of the veil should end just past that line, or you risk cutting off the style line and distracting from the beauty of your gown.

If your dress is plain don’t be afraid of adding embellishments to the veil such as lace or beading.Wedding detail photos with a veil.Wedding detail photos with a veil.Wedding detail photos with a veil.Romantic couples veil close-up.Bridal bouquet photograph at the Santa Barbara Courthouse. Is your dress a mermaid style? Watch for where the style line hits on your body, then your veil can end at the style line, fingertip or cathedral would be perfect.Elopement at the Santa Barbara Courthouse.Newlyweds before their Stella Mare's wedding reception.Contrary to popular beliefs, a cathedral veil does not “take away from the dress,” it actually is very simple and acts as a sheer illusion, still very see through and the back of the dress will be very visible! Plus, as an added bonus, you get that awesome “veil shot” with your photographer!”Sunset wedding photos at Lanikai Beach, Honolulu Hawaii wedding.Montecito bride showing off her cathedral veil.Newlyweds after their wedding ceremony at the Saticoy Club wedding.Bridal portrait at the Stella Mare's wedding reception. Thanks to Lisa of Lili Bridals for her insight in this wedding veil guide!

Whether you wear a veil or not, I’ll still rock your wedding photographs! Having said that, veils are another fun and personalized accessory added to your wedding day, and can help create some unique photographs not only of you and your loved one, but also add some texture to your detail shots.Wedding detail photos with a veil.Wedding detail photos with a veil.Newlyweds after their Mission Santa Barbara church wedding.Bride wearing a veil at San Ysidro Ranch lavender field..Pro tip: If you plan on wearing a veil on your wedding day and gifting your sweetheart with boudoir photos, make sure to bring your veil to our boudoir photoshoot! Click here for more about that…Deciding to wear a veil doesn’t mean you have to wear it all day and night long! You can choose to wear it for certain parts of the day, like just the ceremony and romantic portraits, and forgo it for the rest. If it’s easy to remove and put back on (and won’t mess up your hair style), you can always switch back and forth, like if you want to take it off after the ceremony, but want to have it for sunset photos later in the day.Couple in the rose garden at San Ysidro Ranch.Couple dancing at their Unitarian Society of Santa Barbara wedding.Couple walking along the beach at their Four Seasons Santa Barbara wedding.Romantic sunset photo of a couple kissing at their Skyline Rotorua wedding.Sunset wedding photos at Lanikai Beach, Honolulu Hawaii wedding.Elopement at the Santa Barbara Courthouse.I hope this wedding veil guide with insight from Lisa of Lili Bridals and input from me as a photographer was helpful to you!

Santa Barbara Engagement Photographer | Matt+Breea

Couple embracing by the flowers during their Santa Barbara engagement photoshoot.“I convinced her just to let us two enjoy the afternoon with just us knowing. Little did she know that I had organized to have her parents, my parents and a couple of close friends waiting at a nearby dive bar. We walked in for drinks and all of the people she loved surprised her. There were tears.”

I hope you have someone who looks at you the way Matt looks at Breea! These two couldn’t stop smiling during their Santa Barbara engagement photoshoot. “We met in the dorms as college freshmen at UC Santa Barbara. We went through our college years as just friends, but following graduation, something sparked and, well, it became more than that. We moved to San Diego so Breea could attend graduate school, before moving up to the Bay Area so I could pursue a great career opportunity.”Groom staring at his bride during their portrait photos in Santa Barbara, California.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Close-up photographs of a couple during their Santa Barbara engagement photographs.Groom staring at his bride during their portrait photos in Santa Barbara, California.Groom staring at his bride during their portrait photos in Santa Barbara, California.Groom staring at his bride during their portrait photos in Santa Barbara, California.Engagement photographs taken at a cool spot in Santa Barbra, California.Engagement photographs taken at a cool spot in Santa Barbra, California. How did Matt propose?

“We’d been dating for about nine-or-so years, so it was no surprise that something was coming. We’re literally like the last people in our friends group to get engaged, and we’d get asked when are you going to get married about twice a week. So, no surprise it was coming. We got engaged at a place called Death Rock up near the Russian River. Breea wanted to call everyone, but I convinced her just to let us two enjoy the afternoon with just us knowing. Little did she know I had organized to have her parents, my parents and a couple of close friends waiting at a nearby dive bar. We walked in for drinks and all of the people she loved surprised her. Belmond El Encanto Wedding | Courtney+Matt

Bride and groom snuggling at their Belmond El Encanto hotel wedding.“Matt is kind-hearted, talented and adventurous. He is very easy to talk to and share silence with. He can fill serious moments with laughter. He can play a mean bluesy guitar. He can visualize and draw anything. He can build anything. He can cook steak. He can record and sell nature sounds. He goes on runs with me even though he does not want to! I admire his simplicity – food, footy, and beer. That’s all you need to make him happy! He is a loving brother, uncle, son and friend. His care and devotion to the one’s he loves is why he will make a great husband.”

Courtney and Matt’s Belmond El Encanto Wedding was the perfect intimate gathering for the joining of their Californian and Australian families. It was simple and chic, and filled with the couple’s favorite things–good food, good views, and good company. Their love story began with a chance encounter and led to this beautiful Belmond El Encanto wedding ceremony and reception at the Oak Tree Suite, with many adventures yet to come!

The day before he proposed he told me he had a surprise. The following day we were getting ready for this surprise and I continued to guess what it was. He did not budge.

Before the proposal we went to our hotel bar for a champagne toast. We then ventured all the way to Coronado island in our Uber. Matt was now quiet as ever and a bit restless! We arrived right on time and he surprised me with a beautiful gondola ride on the Coronado Cays. Once we gained a little speed, he read me a poem he wrote. As the bay opened into the ocean, he asked me to marry him, I said yes, stuck out the wrong hand, the ring did not fit, laughed, cried, smiled and then stuck out the left hand and the ring fit perfectly. We spent the rest of the evening celebrating at the Coronado Hotel over dinner, wine and watching the sunset.”Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding.Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding. The two had their First Look for their Belmond El Encanto wedding at the beautiful lilly pond area.Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding.Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding.Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding.Couple's first look at their Belmond El Encanto wedding.“One of my favorite special details that our alterations expert helped us create was adding a piece of my mom’s wedding dress to my dress. I was a bit too tall for my dress and we brainstormed many ideas on how to make the dress longer. My mom pulled out her dress and the fabric matched perfectly to the end of my dress. From Courtney…

“I met Matt’s friend at a festival in California. When I moved to Australia for a work & holiday visa, my friend, Maggie, and I, arranged a meetup with Tim. Tim brought Matt along as his “wing man.” Matt had recently moved to Bondi from the Central Coast. We become good friends and shared the common interest of exploring our new homes in the eastern suburbs. We went on lots of dates like the footy, camping at the Ruins, which later became a yearly tradition, snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef and explored the city.”Bride and groom snuggling at their Belmond El Encanto hotel wedding.Bride and groom portraits at the Belmond El Encanto lilly pond.Bride and groom portraits at the Belmond El Encanto lilly pond.Bride and groom portraits at the Belmond El Encanto lilly pond.Bride and groom portraits at the Belmond El Encanto lilly pond. From Matt, “I made it my personal endeavor to show Courtney around Sydney and Australia and to help her have the best time she possibly could whilst in my country. “Courtney is adventurous, funny, generous and reliable. She is stunningly beautiful with bright blue eyes and a smile that lights up a room. People feel her warmth when they meet her. She has an ability to make people feel at ease with her funny and sometimes quirky sense of humour. She is caring and charitable and loves to help everyone. I love that she lives a healthy and active lifestyle and will choose a hiking trail over Netflix, every time. She is also extremely intelligent, productive and professional. We hired electric bikes to ride in to town. We walked along the beach hand-in-hand. The soccer World Cup was on so it was playing everywhere we went, and we watched the NSW Blues finally beat QLD after 11 series losses in a row. Courtney made a cheese platter and decorated our hotel room with Blues colours.

But it was the day we took a boat ride out to the Great Barrier Reef snorkelling that was the icing on the cake. I have shared many great and happy moments with Courtney since then. But still to this day painted vividly in my mind is the smile I saw on her face when we both emerged to the surface of the reef below. It was a look of pure joy and happiness.

I think we returned from that trip knowing we were on a path to something special.”

Not only is this blue/teal door, overgrown with greenery, a cool backdrop, but in order to get to the beach itself, you also have to walk down a secret path lined with bougainvillea bushes and their colorful flowers. It really is one of Santa Barbara’s best-kept hidden spots. Whether for engagement photographs or wedding photographs, this is one of my favorite locations, without a doubt!Candid photos of Bride and groom during their Santa Barbara engagement photoshoot.Candid photos of Bride and groom during their Santa Barbara engagement photoshoot. The engaged couple doing yoga poses during their yogi engagement photoshoot. The engaged couple doing yoga poses during their yogi engagement photoshoot. The engaged couple doing yoga poses during their yogi engagement photoshoot. How cool and unique are all these poses?! Boudoir Photography | Kiley

A black and white portrait of a blonde woman during her boudoir photoshoot in Los Angeles.“I truly could embrace my womanhood, my body and love every inch of myself without giving a second thought as to what others would think. The experience was much more powerful than I had initially thought it would be…”

If I could sing that from the rooftops! I am all for giving boudoir photos as a gift to one’s sweetheart, but really, more than anything, boudoir photography is a gift to oneself.

I had the pleasure of photographing Kiley’s wedding, as well as these gorgeous photos of her before her big day. Boudoir photos allow us to bring out different sides of ourselves–whether sexual, seductive, playful, carefree, all-of-the-above or non-of-the-above. Each woman brings her own experiences, her own personality and her own touch to her boudoir photos, yet all culminate in feeling empowered.Feminine portrait of a woman with a flower crown at her Los Angeles boudoir photoshoot.Dark and moody portrait of a women during her boudoir photoshoot.A black and white portrait of a blonde woman during her boudoir photoshoot in Los Angeles.Dark and moody portrait of a women during her boudoir photoshoot.More from Kiley about her boudoir photography experience…

“I wanted to do a boudoir shoot as my traditional gift to my husband before the wedding. I was raised in a conservative, religious household where modesty is a true virtue. I was nervous and insecure about my body and someone I hardly knew photographing it. During the shoot, Karen made me feel secure and confident. She could tell at times I was somewhat uncomfortable but would coach me out of it and boost my confidence to get this shoot done. Afterwards, when I gave my husband the book of photos, he was in shock that I would do something like this, it was so out of character for me and he loved it! The photos were very artfully done with minimal to no retouching so that it was actually me in those pictures and not some idealistic version of me. Looking back, I cherish the experience because it allowed me to break out of my shell and this idea that as a woman I had to always remain modest and keep my body covered. I truly could embrace my womanhood, my body and love every inch of myself without giving a second thought as to what others would think. The experience was much more powerful than I had initially thought it would be and I truly thank Karen for being so supportive and encouraging throughout the process!”

Carcassonne France Engagement Photographs | Elise+Sébastien

Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress. When in France…find a castle, a cute couple, and let the magic commence! We had so much fun during Elise and Sébastien’s Carcassonne France engagement photographs, when we strolled around the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Their joie de vivre and love felt like out of a fairytale, and the location matched 😉 From fortified walls and quaint streets, to archways and bridges, to cobblestones and castles, though it was an overcast day, the couple brought their own sunshine for their Carcassonne France engagement photographs!Carcassonne France engagement photographs taken in the fortified city and French castle.Engagement photographs captured in Carcassonne France by destination wedding photographer, Karen D Photography.Engagement photographs captured in Carcassonne France by destination wedding photographer, Karen D Photography.Engagement photographs captured in Carcassonne France by destination wedding photographer, Karen D Photography.Engagement photographs captured in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Engagement photographs captured in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Engagement photographs captured in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.I asked Elise and Sébastien to share a little about what makes their relationship work so well…

“We are both sensitive people, who have gone through turbulent and controling relationships in the past. Consequently, what makes us such a solid couple is that we appreciate more than most what freedom as a couple is about…”Engagement photographs captured in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Engagement photographs captured in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.
“…We are free to be silly, to joke around, to be frank, to love the good and the bad. Our imperfections put-together make our coupledom such a harmonious one. I even enjoy being angry at him… (weird huh!). Because I know and he knows there is always enough space for discussion, disagreement and sharing…”Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Castle Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.Carcassonne France engagement photographs taken in the fortified city and castle.Castle Wedding photographs of couple walking together in the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress.
“…We have so much in common, yet we are opposites in so many aspects. And the most beautiful thing is that because we are aware, and are in peace and harmony about who we are as individuals, our strengths as a couple are beautifully amplified.”
